Tilted Brick Gallery

A gallery run by volunteers, on a website none of them need help to change.

The situation
Tilted Brick Gallery is an artist-run centre. The women who founded it and a volunteer board keep it going. Every hour spent fighting a website is an hour not spent on exhibitions, artists, or the space.
They did not need an impressive site. They needed one that will still be current in six months with nobody technical around to keep it that way.
What we built
A custom site with an editor built for people who do not work in software. Artists, exhibits, events, and the board each have their own screen. A change goes live the moment it is saved.
Two details came from watching how the gallery runs. Nothing is ever really deleted. Removing something sends it to a trash you can pull it back out of, so a mistake made in a hurry is not permanent.
The gallery is run from an iPad, and iPads quietly swallow the usual browser confirmation pop-ups. So every confirmation is built into the page itself, where it cannot be missed.
We also moved the society to Google Workspace for Nonprofits, so its email and files sit alongside the website.
The outcome
The board updates the site themselves, on the iPad they already carry around the gallery. Nothing routes through us to go live.
Posting an exhibition, adding an artist, fixing a date. Each one now takes a minute, so none of them has to be scheduled as a job any more.
