Is SEO Worth It for a Small Business? Yes, and Here Is the Honest Trade.

SEO works for small businesses. It is slower than ads and cheaper than ads, and most competitors give up before it pays.

SEO works for small businesses. It is slower than ads and cheaper than ads, and most competitors give up before it pays.

That last part is why it works. Search rewards the business still writing in month nine.

What you are actually buying

You are buying a position in the results for questions your customers type. That position keeps sending visitors after you stop working on it. An ad stops the day the card declines.

One client we coached on search best practice doubled their website traffic year over year, and it is still growing. The work was not clever. It was consistent.

Local search is where a small business wins

You are not competing with the whole internet. You are competing with the four other businesses in your trade within driving distance. Most of them have a website nobody has touched since it launched.

Three things decide local results:

  • A complete and active Google Business Profile
  • Your business name, address, and phone number written identically everywhere online
  • Pages that name the places you actually serve, in normal sentences

That is a week of work with a permanent effect.

What it costs

Less than ads, in money. More than ads, in patience.

Expect three to six months before the trend is clear. Expect nine to twelve before it carries real business. If somebody promises page one in thirty days, they are selling ads and calling it SEO.

When SEO is the wrong choice

Be honest about this. SEO is a poor fit if:

  • You need customers this month to make payroll
  • Nobody searches for what you sell, because you invented the category
  • Your website is broken, slow, or unfinished

Fix the site first. Run ads for the short term. Then build search underneath.

What to do first

Write down the ten questions customers ask you before they buy. Answer each one properly on your own site, with the question as the heading.

That single exercise beats most paid SEO packages sold to small businesses.
